Hi,
As requested, I'll give you a quick review of my printer... It's a Lexmark Interpret S405, which I paid about $200 for in Officeworks.
Good:
* It is wireless and is pretty easy to connect to the home network
* It mostly prints as required and connects both to my mac and my partner's PC laptop without too many troubles.
* Printing is quick
Bad:
* It is a bit noisy when printing
* Scanning has been a bit troublesome, especially with the PC which often cannot initiate a scan over the network
* To work wirelessly on the network it needs to be kept in standby ("power-saving") mode. I'm not a great fan of leaving electronics on all the time as they still consume electricity which costs money and isn't great for the environment
Ugly:
* The cost of consumables (ink) is horrendous for this printer. I don't blame the retailers - I blame Lexmark. They sell black 100XL cartridges for upwards of $30, but sell 105XL cartridges for about $8. These are exactly the same cartridge but have a different chip in them which restricts them to be used only with the Pro805 Prestige - a printer that costs about $300 more. Effectively Lexmark are differentiating their markets to rip off their customers.
Overall I'm fairly happy with the printer itself and would probably give it 3 out of 5. If I had known when I purchased it the cost of keeping it going I would have paid the extra $300 and got the Pro805 instead - the initial additional expense would be offset within months. Or I'd have researched the options better and gone for a printer that I could refill myself.
