Printing Tips - Better colour on plain paper

We are often asked how to get better print quality on plain paper.  Plain paper being vastly cheaper than the specially coated papers.  The quality you can get out of plain paper is limited but there are a few things you can do to improve it.  If you want to get sharp print with strong vibrant colour you really need to understand the relationship between ink, paper and light.

  1. Light - Be sure you are in a well lit environment, what you are seeing may not be what you are printing.  Dim or tinted lighting will alter the brightness and colour of your print.  The whiter and brighter the environmental lighting the more accurate and brighter your prints will be as there is more light to reflect all the colours off the printed sheet into your eyes.  If you are in a room lit with a definite tint, like an old yellowed bulb giving off yellow tinted light, the white paper you are printing on will look a dull yellow.  This yellow light source will be hiding shades of yellow in your print and effecting other colours.
  2. Paper - Is your paper really white?  Compare it to other sheets from different sources.  You may be quite amazed at all the different 'whites' out there.  The white of the paper you are printing on is part of the colour printing system.  Its one of the colour components to the printed colour image, in fact its the primary colour in the system as it's present in all your prints.  Its not just a medium to print on, its part of the colour.  Try printing a sunset on blue paper.  You'll get something very different because the printing system needs the white paper to complete the colour.  Take a close look at the surface of the paper.  Plain, cheap paper can be far from white, somewhat see through and is also usually quite coarse to touch.  This coarseness, a little like sand paper, is tangible evidence of a highly uneven surface.  To see an image in colour you need white light to hit the image and bounce off into your eye.  An uneven surface disperses the reflected light in all directions reducing the amount of light that hits the back of your eye.  An increase in amount of reflected light is an increase in brightness.  So look for a white smooth paper.  Double A is a brand of plain 80gsm paper that has very high quality.  The next step up from here is paper made for laser printers.  These papers are often more expensive but nowhere near specially coated paper prices.  Lastly be sure that your printer settings are set to plain paper.  The wrong printer settings will have a massive impact.
  3. Ink - There's not much you can do about this one as you probably already have your printer but its definitely worth knowing about especially for next time.  The type of ink your printer takes can have a real impact on print quality on plain paper.  There are 2 basic types of ink used in inkjet printers these days.  Dye based and Pigment based.  Dye inks are more prone to soak into paper than Pigment based inks.  As the dye ink soaks in it runs in all directions feathering the edges of things you want to remain sharp and spreading the amount of colour out over a larger area causing a wash out effect.  The particles in Pigment ink are much larger and usually coated with a resin.  This helps them resist soak in, staying on the surface of the paper in the location they were put as they are more easily caught up by the fibres.  All inks suffer from soak in effects but Pigment inks are definitely better at resisting this.  This only applies to ink when being used on plain paper.  Dye inks used on specially coated papers can actually have a higher colour density than pigment inks.

New Site Search

Most regular internet users will have experienced the frustration of practically useless internal website search services.  Up until last month we were no different.  We have now installed tailor made search software and feel that we have one of the best search services available.  The search window is just below the main header (along side HOME and CONTACT US buttons), visible on every page.  Type whatever you are after and click enter.  Remember the shorter and more specific the search terms the better.  There’s no point searching for 'HP' alone as you will get every HP product we stock in no particular order, but entering 'HP 78' will tell the search software the brand and product name bringing you exactly what you are after.

New Quick Reorder

I think almost everyone would agree that there is something incredibly frustrating about searching through and waiting for websites, especially when you are reordering products.  What if you could click on one link, add your regular items to the shopping cart and checkout.  No more searching!  Well now you can - when a registered customer places an order with Inkjet Online a new function records the types of products that were purchased.  Next time you login you can click on the Quick Reorder link in the Mini Cart and these products will be listed there for you.  As well as that you can add products to this Quick Reorder list even though you may not want to buy them today.  Simply login, find the product you will want in the future and click on 'Add to Wish List'.  The items in this list stay there until you delete them.

Now selling Laser cartridges

We are now selling Laser Cartridges.  Because we stock what we sell and there are thousands of different types, we are only stocking cartridges for relatively new machines or those specifically asked for by our customers.  Please let us know if you would like a price on a laser cartridge.  If you like our prices we will load the laser cartridge on the site, send you a link and stock it from then on.

Aussie Dollar Climbs Again

In all this economic bad news there has to be some good news.  Well I'm pleased to let you know that the recent increases in the value of the Australian dollar will be bringing prices back down.  Most of us will be well aware of the shocking price increases we have experienced as the $AU fell from almost $1 American to as low as $0.60.  This created increases in wholesale prices of up to 60% for some products.  Most suppliers held on as long as they could and absorbed as much as possible but eventually all suppliers had to raise prices dramatically.  Thankfully the $AU is now at $0.80 and possibly set to climb higher making significant cost reductions in the coming months.

A new range of Generic Cartridges

We have started stocking a new range of generic cartridge called Premium Green.  We believe Premium green offers another step up in quality from our other quality generic cartridges and may in time replace some of the products we offer.  Premium Green cartridges are better in several ways.  Firstly they are refilled Genuine Cartridges meaning that they work like an original, you are getting the closest thing to genuine possible without the cost of genuine.  Premium Green uses only the highest grade German ink.  In our opinion the quality of the ink is the single most important component in generic cartridges.  Poor quality inks will cause the most damage to your printer.  Premium Green is Quality ISO 9001 Certified.  Being refilled originals they are 100% recycled making these cartridges extremely environmentally friendly.  In most cases the Premium Green cartridge contains more ink than the original. Sometimes up to 70% more.  Premium Green is only available on a select range of cartridges.  Always shop by printer model to see all cartridges we stock for your machine.
